About

The Chemistry Department has a long and illustrious history at NMT. The department offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Biochemistry and Environmental Science options are also available for the B.S. degree.

Graduates in chemistry can readily find employment in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Chemists are also in demand at federal laboratories and other research institutions. Chemistry is an excellent preparation for medical, veterinary, dental, pharmacy school, or graduate school

Major areas of research include:

The bachelor’s in chemistry at New Mexico Tech is unique for requiring a senior thesis of all of its graduates. This experience requires students to work with a faculty member on an independent research project for two semesters, write a senior thesis, and present their findings. Many undergraduate students begin work in our labs in their sophomore or junior years.

The Department of Chemistry offers numerous traditional and non-traditional chemistry courses for both undergraduates and graduates. While faculty members are qualified in the major divisions of chemistry, such as organic, analytical, physical and biochemistry, research is focused on topics that relate chemistry to human society. Faculty members conduct research in two general areas that relate chemistry to human society – human health related and environmental topics.
