Electron Microscopy

The Materials Engineering Department features a modern, high-resolution Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The tabs below highlight the location, overview, and pricing details of the SEM, along with the contact information for the lab and information on the SEM class.

Overview

The Materials and Metallurgical Engineering department features a JSM-IT700HR Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) produced by JEOL. The machine is capable of chemical analyses via Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), high-resolution imaging using Secondary Electron (SE) and Backscattered Electron (BSE) detectors, and crystallographic orientation using Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). The SEM is a vital tool for research across many disciplines, and is used by many departments throughout New Mexico Tech.

Our department also features other microscopes such as a Hirox KH-7700 digital microscope and several light microscopes. Please feel free to contact the lab to reserve your time on any of the microscopes!

Prices

'Assisted' refers to work done with the help of the lab manager, 'Individual' refers to work done alone.

'Internal' rates refer to projects sponsored by New Mexico Tech, while 'External' rates refer to projects sponsored by other organizations and not involved with New Mexico Tech.

The flat price for the Hirox Digital Microscope is $20/hr, and $5/hr for the light microscopes.

Sample Preparation

Prepped Samples

Samples mounted and platinum coated (top); in epoxy pucks and carbon coated (bottom).

Samples must be prepared before analysis on the SEM. This can include cutting, setting in epoxy or Bakelite, and/or coating with carbon or platinum.

A Scanning Electron Microscopy class (MTLS 4083) is offered by NMT in the Fall. The class, taught by lab manager Mason Woodard, will teach students how to use an SEM, the science behind electron beam instruments, and the parts of the SEM.
