Macie Niles
🎓 Graduate Spotlight: Macie Niles
B.S. in Psychology, Class of 2025
When Macie Niles first came to New Mexico Tech, she didn’t picture herself as a psychology
major. But one class, experimental psychology taken to fulfill a biology elective,
completely changed her path. "I ended up switching majors after that," Macie says.
"I really love working with people, and helping others makes me happy. Psychology
just felt right."
So did Tech. Coming from Albuquerque, Macie found a close-knit campus that felt like a true community. "I started the year after COVID, and Tech helped me step out of my comfort zone. I loved the small classes and discussion-based learning. That’s what really drew me in."
Her choice paid off. Not only did she find her academic passion, but she also became a deeply involved member of the campus community. As a Resident Assistant, Macie earned the “Rockstar RA” award, a recognition that meant a lot to her. "I struggled as a freshman and even considered dropping out," she says. "Now I get to support students who are going through similar things. I’m really proud of that."
Even though she didn’t participate in formal research, Macie still found ways to make an impact. She was chosen for the very first Student Leadership Ambassador Program, where she built her communication and goal-setting skills. In one of her social justice classes, she worked on improving accessibility for the psychology department’s website. "It’s been really cool to take what I’m learning in class and use it to make things better around campus."
When asked about her favorite professor, Macie doesn’t hesitate. "Dr. Taffeta Elliott (Assistant Professor Psychology and Education), without a doubt. She pushed me, challenged me, and believed in me. She helped me apply to grad school and never let me feel invisible. I struggled with imposter syndrome and didn’t always feel like I belonged, but she reminded me of my strengths again and again. She didn’t just teach psychology. She taught me how to advocate for myself and be proud of who I am. I honestly don’t think I’d be here without her."
Macie’s journey wasn’t always easy. Sophomore year brought some tough lessons. She failed a few exams and had to reassess how she approached her studies. "That was rough, but it taught me so much. I figured out better ways to study and came back stronger. Grades are important, but they don’t define who you are."
Outside of class, Macie found her own way to unwind. "I loved going to Capital Bar for karaoke and trivia nights. It helped me stay connected with friends outside of school. And when I needed a quiet moment, I’d head to the duck pond."
After graduation, Macie is heading to the University of Minnesota Mankato to earn her Master’s in Industrial-Organizational Psychology. She wants to help build better teams and stronger leaders in the workplace. "Tech gave me a strong foundation. The group projects, presentations, all of it helped me become a more confident communicator."
Her advice to future Tech students? "One test doesn’t make or break you. Don’t let one grade shake your confidence. Get involved. Say yes to opportunities. This campus has so much to offer."
If she could go back in time and give her freshman-year self a little advice, she’d
keep it simple.
"Do more. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there."
As she closes this chapter, Macie shares her heartfelt thanks to the people who helped her get here. Her mom, siblings, dad, aunt, Nana, and her partner Nicholas. "They’ve supported me every step of the way." And of course, she adds, "Thank you to Dr. Elliott. You believed in me when I didn’t yet believe in myself. I’ll always be grateful for that."
Macie looks forward to carrying on the Techie traditions and staying connected with alumni as she starts this exciting new chapter.
